Do you see the big smile on my face? That tells you how excited I am about running in the ING NYC Marathon for The Fortune Society. This is my first marathon; the training has been intense, at times even painful. But I like the challenge, especially since I recently celebrated my 60th birthday. Running is so exhilarating; running makes me feel better physically and psychologically. I want to thank my friends at Back on My Feet NYC who have helped me so much with my training.
But running to raise money for The Fortune Society is most important. I spent over 29 years in prison and it has been a bigger challenge than running to re-enter mainstream society. Fortune has generously provided me with shelter at The Fortune Academy (a.k.a. the Castle) since April 2010 as part of their excellent Housing Program. I have also received guidance in finding work from the Employment Services Program, computer training, legal assistance and other services I needed to make a fresh start. I am so grateful that Fortune has a Case Management system and I have been teamed with a professional counselor, a wise and knowledgeable friend who has helped me tackle the rough spots in my transition. Please make a contribution in my name to support The Fortune Society. Your donation will help Fortune give others the services they need to successfully rejoin our communities.
