JACKS TO OPEN, TRIPS TO WIN
My Run for Susan
this year i'll be running the NYC marathon for a long time friend, susan nier. i've known her for more than 15 years. she's had MS for at least twice that long. she's a woman of incredible spirit, insurmountable courage, and indefatigable will.
one of susan's favorite things to do was host poker parties. we'd ante up early in the evening and wouldn't fold until the early hours of the next morning. the scene was set with boxes of pizza, heaps of junk food, and bottles of everything (it was only once every other month or so, plus she had to make concerted efforts to keep her weight on ;) there was a hyperactive toy poodle who was a hundred places at once and a super sullen teenager who wouldn't leave his room. the music was typically classic rock, classic jazz, or some scratchy pirate radio. the conversation was always new york (the theater, the Times, the new restaurant, the neighborhood, the republicans who are ruining everything :) and no one had a mobile phone to post a status update, instagram their pimm's cup, or text their friends. all the friends were there creating memories that bespeak the core ideas and ideals of friendship.
some nights susan's hands would shake so bad her cards would end up on the floor more often than the table. or, her mouth would end up chasing her straw in circles in an exasperating game of keep-away. didn't matter. she never gave up. at some point she'd throw down four-of-a-kind and find a way to knock back three (or four) martinis. come to think of it, she was always very much under control when she collected the money from the pot. hmmm....
four years ago, susan became bed-ridden with MS. she's still in the same apartment, but she hasn't made it to the card table in a long time. when i hit mile 18 on sunday morning i'll be able to see her building. she won't be able to come out to the street for a hug or a hi-5. there's even a good chance she won't realize the race is happening that day. but i'll be running for her and people like her. people who bring laughs to our lives and tears to our memories.
please help keep poker parties going for everyone with MS. your donation is greatly appreciated. and your cheers are most welcome. both will help us in ways you may never know, but we can't do it without them.
thank you. xoxo.

Tisch MSRCNY was selected by New York Road Runners (NYRR) as a charity community partner of the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon. We are a dedicated team of runners, including physicians, nurses, patients, and friends of the Tisch Multiple Sclerosis Research Center of New York who have committed themselves to running and raising funds.
We have set an ambitious goal of $75,000 to help support our cutting-edge research program including the development of biomarkers, understanding disease mechanisms, and identification of a trigger that might cause the disease. Tisch MS Research Center of New York is the only organization in the US conducting an FDA-approved Phase I stem cell clinical trial using neuroprogenitors with the potential to repair the damage caused by MS and reverse disability.
If you can support our team by making a tax-deductible donation, please do! Your contribution will make an impact on the progress we are making in understanding MS in order to find the cause of and cure for the disease.
