EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
On April 17, 2017, I’ll be running the 121st Boston Marathon. I’m excited to be in this year’s class, but I’m even more humbled to run at the request of my dear friends, Rich and Anna Levitan, in honor of their daughter Merritt.
Although I never had the opportunity to meet Merritt, I’ve come to know that she was an exceptional young woman with a real passion for life. She didn’t let any obstacle ever get in her way, not even a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes at age 7. Merritt was a beloved daughter and sibling, a mentor, champion and dear friend to many, all while becoming a certified ski instructor, co-captain of her varsity tennis team and an accomplished scholar preparing for Colgate University – and all of this in 18 years. Merritt was tireless, determined, committed – an inspiring woman.
On July 2, 2013, Merritt lost her life to a young driver who was texting behind-the-wheel on a country road in Arkansas. The 21-year old driver hit her, while she was participating in a cross country bike trip, the Overland American Challenge, from South Carolina to California. Merritt and her fellow teammates biked almost 1,000 miles and crossed the Mississippi the day before she was hit. Her determination and celebration for life ended too soon. Merritt died the next day in Memphis from a traumatic brain injury.
Out of this tragedy Merritt’s Way Fund was established to start TextLess Live More, a national awareness campaign to educate young people about the dangers of distracted driving and to save lives. I run to celebrate Merritt and her awesome passion for life. On behalf of the Levitan Family, I’m committed to raise $10,000 for TextLess Live More.
Join me in honoring Merritt to end distracted driving, support education and raise awareness about the dangers of texting behind-the-wheel. I’ll be reaching out to each of you personally to share more of Merritt’s story and how you can make an impact. Thank you for your support and I look forward to talking with you soon.
