EVENT: 2015 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 20, 2015
Allow me an introduction- My name is Jeff Phillips and this will be my first marathon ever. I'm proud to be able to run with such a wonderful team and fantastic, internationally recognized coach, Don Megarle.
This year's race has particular meaning for me, professionally and personally. First and foremost, we are training and running to raise funds for an excellent cause- research and support for programs which fight obesity and promote healthy nutrition. As a primary care doctor, and alumni of the Tufts Family Medicine Residency Program, I spend most of my day treating illnesses which are preventable. 80-90% of disease in the US is preventable- meaning if folks ate less, moved more, didn’t smoke and ate more fruits and veggies, there would be significantly less illness and death. I’m proud that this money will go directly towards this fight.
Personally, I am moved and honored to be running the 2015 Boston Marathon. Having grown up, studied, and now living in the Boston area, I was tremendously affected by the terrorist bombings that took place in 2013. A friend of mine was killed, my wife (an anesthesiologist at Brigham and Women’s) treated several of the victims, and thousands of lives were shaken. I vowed on that day that I would someday run in their honor. I am also running to honor the late Dr. Michael Davidson, a cardiac surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital who was recently shot and killed by a former patient’s family member. By all accounts, he was a wonderful physician, father, and human being. The entire medical community is saddened by his loss. When I have trouble finding motivation to train, remembering these folks inspires me to keep going.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my amazing wife Angela, family, friends, coworkers, and patients- all of whom have been extremely supportive in this challenging endeavor!
Please Consider donating. Every little bit helps!
