On Sunday, June 26, team Heavy Breathers will join hundreds of athletes to run the 2016 Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) 10K road race to support Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH).
Our team is proud to be running in support of the Pulmonary Fibrosis Research Fund (www.pulmonaryfibrosisresearchfund.org), established in 2013 by Chip Spilios. Pulmonary Fibrosis is a progressive, usually incurable disease affecting approximately 130,000 patients in the United States, with nearly 50,000 new cases diagnosed annually. PF has a mortality rate of nearly 40,000 each year – the same number of deaths as breast cancer.
During the four years that Chip lived with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), he was in the care of the Interstitial Lung Disease research team at Brigham & Women's Hospital. Led by Drs. Ivan Rosas and Hilary Goldberg, the ILD team focuses on advancing the understanding of pathogenesis and identification of novel treatment modalities for patients with ILD via robust basic, translational and clinical research programs.
The PFRF also helps to fund the PF Support Group at the Brigham, which provides valuable information and support to patients with IPF, their families and caregivers.
