THE STORY:

Henry Worobec wrote -

Help us fund the travel expenses of volunteer filmmaker, Henry Worobec, so that he can help us shed light on the proposed hydro-power dam projects on the Marañón River.  Check out the website for this project at http://www.maranonproject.org.

The currently free-flowing Marañón River is not only important for the cultural and ecological health of Peru but is also the mainstem source of the Amazon River.  Starting in the Andes Mountains, it cuts through a canyon twice the depth of the Colorado River’s Grand Canyon and nurtures the rain forests of the Amazon basin.  As the energy demands of Peru increase, the Marañón River faces over 20 proposed megadam projects, two of which have already been approved. The energy created by the proposed dams has been slated to power Peruvian coal mines and in large be exported out of the country. Any one of these dams would cause the first major break in connectivity between the Andean headwaters and the Amazonian flood plain.

The thousands of river residents that would be displaced by the dams and the mediocre existing environmental impact studies have been under represented in the decision making process. Local protests to the dams have already ensued and a grassroots anti-dam movement gains momentum every day, but it will take large-scale, international support to convince the Peruvian government to turn down projects from multi billion dollar corporations like Odebrecht.

This summer, our international team, including a Hydrologist and Fluvial Geomorphologist, will converge in the heart of Peru for a 30 day raft voyage down the Marañón. Our scientific objective for this trip is to collect base-line data to characterize the existing hydrology and geomorphology of the river, including field measurements of sediment input sites and low-level aerial imagery. We hope to advance the understanding of the impacts of installing hydro-power dams to natural resources and ecosystem integrity of the river.

We want Henry Worobec with us, to document through video 1.) the free-flowing state of the Marañón, 2.) the data collection and research findings, and 3.) collect aerial imagery to be used in the assessment of morphologic complexity. Additionally, he will produce a video that shares our scientific findings as well as depicting the inherent beauty of the river. We believe that this video will be crucial in disseminating information to the public and help build support for a better informed decision making process.

Henry is volunteering his video work and equipment for this project, but needs your help to travel to Peru and get on the Marañón. Funds received from this CrowdRise campaign will go towards the travel expenses for Henry. Any funds that exceed our base-line goal of funding his trip will go towards further research and video equipment, enhancing the quality of the final video and the scope of the hydrologic and geomorphologic data collection and research in the field.

In summary, our mission is to record and analyze the Marañón and to empower those who wish speak up in the discussion for the future of the Peruvian Amazon. Please help us accomplish this by donating to our CrowdRise campaign and spreading the word!

Was always bummed that I missed your and Leif's wedding. Think of this as an extremely late wedding gift, for a great cause! Thanks for putting this together, looking forward to checking out the video. Really hope to paddle that section some day! 4 years ago
