THE STORY:

I run for WITS because I want my daughters and their friends and classmates to get better food at public school. I run for WITS because I admire the people who make it run, from the leadership of Nancy Easton and Bill Telepan to the in-the-trenches work of chefs like Carly Gould & Shani Porter.

It's my second year on the Wellness marathon team. At Egg and Parish Hall we'd participated in their gala fundraisers for years, and I admired their mission, and the idea of helping them do their good work while training for and running in one of the world's great footraces seemed like a can't-lose arrangement.

And so we trained, and the WITS team gathered from time to time to share stories of sore feet and tired mornings and training runs on bridges that seemed to go up forever and never come down. And we managed to raise a good pile of money and get ourselves in pretty good position to run the marathon.

Then Sandy hit, and we put our energy to other purposes. I gave up the dream of crossing the finish line in Central Park for the reality of tearing out sea-soaked drywall from a garage on Staten Island. We sent crews to Coney Island to feed people in high rises, and we raised money to help restore the neighborhoods around us that took the brunt of storm.

But we kept working with Wellness through the year--we worked at their Gala again, and we signed up as a partner restaurant for PS 295 in Park Slope. The kids who were hungry and poorly fed before the storm were all the more at risk after the storm, and it felt important to keep a focus on their long-term needs even as we tried to help folks recover from the sudden catastrophe of a hurricane.

And now we're back, trying again. And it feels appropriate to come back around a second time and try again, because if there's anything the marathon teaches, and anything you need to change the school food system in New York, it's persistence. It's not work for people who are put off by setbacks.

So here we go. Please pitch in! We're partnering with a new school this year--PS 84, right down the street from our restaurants in Williamsburg. It also happens to be the school of two people who keep me running even when I'm not training.

Make a difference in the lives of thousands of children by supporting the Wellness in the Schools (WITS) ING New York City Marathon Team as they fundraise for healthier food and fitness programming in public schools.

This year WITS has seen unprecedented growth: We are now in 47 NYC public schools, 12 schools in eastern Kentucky, and have launched the revolution in two Florida pilot schools. WITS has been named World Diabetes Day Champions by the International Diabetes Foundation; Food Revolution Heroes by Chef Jamie Oliver; and Lunchbox Heroes by Renegade Lunch Lady, Chef Ann Cooper.

By supporting the WITS marathon team you can become part of the school food revolution and help us provide much-needed food and fitness programming in high-poverty public schools.
