EVENT DATE: May 30, 2015

Women on Wheels W.O.W.

THE STORY:

We are Women on Wheels (W.O.W.): a unique sisterhood of women with spinal cord injuries living life to its fullest. Choosing not to sit still WISHING for things to happen, we ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE in creating change; tackling daily obstacles and challenges with inner strength, backbone and determination. Empowered by our individual and shared life experiences, we continue to move forward.

With the support of The Alan T. Brown Foundation, NYCSCIA and Mount Sinai Hospital, we have spent the past year developing the first SCI women’s group in New York City. Being that women only make up approximately 20% of the overall SCI population, we are a minority within a minority in our society. Let’s face it, women with SCI often have unique concerns and experiences related to their dis/Ability, but rarely have the opportunity to comfortably share these issues among a room full of men with SCI voicing their own “personal or intimate” concerns. Through this group, we provide women with spinal cord injuries a space where our knowledge can be shared across age ranges, injury levels, and years of experience. We seek to empower, educate and support one another.

Our group meets weekly where we discuss various topics such as dating and sexuality, self-image, relationships with family, partners and friends, education, independence, co-dependence, self-advocacy, and dis/Ability as identity.

Because of sponsorship from NYCSCIA, The Alan T. Brown Foundation and Mount Sinai Hospital, we have been able to hold weekly meetings and also offer various workshops specifically geared toward women with spinal cord injuries. Workshops we hope to offer in the future include: self-defense, dance and other creative arts, emergency preparedness, beauty and adaptive fashion, and physical and emotional health and well-being of women with SCIs.

On May 30th, Women on Wheels (W.O.W.) will be participating in the SCI Awareness 5K. Please donate to our team and help us reach our goal of raising $1500. All funds raised will go directly to these five non-profit organizations (The Alan T. Brown Foundation, NYCSCIA, Wheels of Progress, Wheeling Forward and the Wheelchair Sports Federation) in support of their continued efforts to improve the quality of life for those living with spinal cord injuries.
