LADY LIBERTY

The Douglas A26-B Invader is a WWII era medium attack bomber that was developed to improve the characteristics of it’s predecessor the A-20 Havoc. The Invader came to the war late, being delivered in 1944 but was a strong and capable ship having been retained in USAF service through World War II, the Korean conflict and Vietnam. As a point-of-fact, the A-26 was one of the first bombers that arrived to support the 101st Airborne during the Battle of the Bulge at Bastogne. The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) currently owns three A-26s, two which are in airshow operations and one currently in restoration all of which are groups of dedicated individuals who fly and maintain these proud birds. This A-26 is affectionately known as Lady Liberty.

The mission of the Commemorative Air Force is education, such that generations of Americans will value and support the contributions of military aviation in assuring our nation’s freedom. Lady Liberty accomplishes this mission by attending airshows, providing tours both on the road and at home, entertaining the guests with informative literature and providing a special kids incentive by giving rides on our children’s bomb train. Prior to the current team effort the aircraft had been kept outside and was suffering the ill fortunes of not being well kept up with and not being hangered.

This situation was putting the aircraft in a slow and continual spiral into degradation. We were just about at the point where the aircraft was operating well and the crew member were training and working well together when the month to month hanger fees tripled. So, we went on a quest to find a new home for the Lady Liberty and was able to secure an old WWII hanger on an airport adjacent to an Air Force Base that was used during Korea as an A-26 training base. Our new hanger is 10 feet wider than the wing span and it had just enough room for the A-26 and all of its support equipment.

Today, we have gone from the original three-person unit to just over thirty volunteers and every weekend that the aircraft is not out being used at airshows or being operated for training flights it is being cared for by the loving hands of the volunteers of the group while being supervised and taught by some very talented aircraft technicians, mechanics , and inspectors. Because of the time the aircraft spent outside in the elements, the paint has been degraded to an awful state and the entire aircraft is in dire need of a complete paint job. The paint job has been estimated at $22,000.

We would love to have your support!
