THE STORY:

Kori Hahn wrote -

My name is Kori Hahn. Let me introduce myself, I am the founder of Santosha Society which offers boutique surf trips around the world. More than just that, I am currently 8 months pregnant with my first child. I have decided to give birth at Bumi Sehat Foundation which is located in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia, just a short drive from our home on the wave-happy coastline of Canggu. Bumi Sehat offers a gentle, natural, and safe birthing option for local Indonesian women as well as the western women that chose to birth here. So first, my business Santosha Society has a karma yoga policy of donating back 10% of our profits for a cause we believe in. It’s no wonder why we have decided to donate the profits from our next two retreats in Sri Lanka to this incredible non-profit organization. Let me explain. Robin Lim, the founder and birthmother of Bumi Sehat Foundation is a whole lot more than just my midwife. Many of you might be familiar with her as she was CNN’s “hero of the year” and has given a beautiful “TED” Talk explaining how she has spent her life selflessly supporting women, children, and families through her clinics in Bali and Aceh. She has saved countless lives and tirelessly continues on her mission to save more. To me, Bumi Sehat Foundation in Ubud is a gentle, birthing center, but for many it so much more than that. Bumi Sehat Foundation International is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They give access to healthcare to many families that have no money and therefore no options. They offer kind, hygienic and culturally appropriate childbirth facilities to those who cant afford it, and for those (like myself) who would like their guidance and support on my own gentle, natural birth coming up. In 2014 in Bali, there were 1,247 babies born gently into the hands of the Bumi Sehat midwives. They provide health services, emergency care, education services and environmental programs for the community (over 165,000 people in 2014). They are devoted to improving the quality of life and to build peace – one mother, one child, one family at a time. Bumi Sehat is a really small NGO and yet we have demonstrated a model of care that is effective, inexpensive and sustainable. ~ Robin Lim They built a clinic in Aceh, Sumatra to help with the crisis after the 2004 Christmas Day Tsunami. As most of you know, the area was absolutely devastated. The need for the clinic remained, so they stayed. There has been a health care clinic and birthing center on the ground in Aceh ever since. And there is the bustling little loving clinic in Ubud, Bali. The clinic is quite simple really. On first appearance it is just a basic building, but the energy, perseverance, care and love continuously given by the huge-hearted humans that work as acupuncturist, midwives, and healthcare clinicians are what make it absolutely amazing.
