A Call to Action: DiaResQ for Haitian Children
Organized by: David Crane
Pantheryx has recently come to market with a nutritional supplement called DiaResQ (it is not classified as "medicine" because it is all natural made, principally, from bovine colostrum) that has been demonstrated in field testing to have remarkable impact in flushing out the causes of childhood diarrhea as well as addressing the symptoms - often with just one treatment. As you know, dehydration caused by diarrhea is the second largest killer of children in the developing world and, even in cases where it doesnt kill, it leads to stunted growth. With the current situation in Haiti, childhood diarrhea has become an acute and immediate concern both in the hurricane afflicted zone and in other parts of the country. We have secured an initial batch of 28,000 treatments in total - at their wholesale cost plus a handling charge. With associated equipment and an equivalent supply of oral rehydration solution (DiaResQ stops the diarrhea but does not itself provide the child with the necessary rehydration), we can treat children for about $1.50/child. That means our intervention will help tens of thousands Haitian children! I do want to emphasize that DiaResQ has not been tested against diarrhea caused by cholera so we can make no promises in that regard, but I - unfortunately - have been assured that there are ample cases of childhood diarrhea in Haiti caused by the more usual causes.
