Join me as I leave the land of 10,000 lakes and head west to support coldwater conservation of native trout in the 2016 Middle Creek Flyathlon. The Flyathlon is a unique race event that integrates three of the West's greatest activities; trail running, fly-fishing, and craft beer. The premise is simple... run. fish. beer. During an official event, your score is determined as the time it takes you to run (with all of your fishing equipment on your back) through the entire course, adjusted by a “fish factor” based on what you caught during your run. Both the night before and after the race, fine local craft beer is served. The 3rd Annual Middle Creek Flyathlon is a fundraising event for coldwater conservation projects, with a focus on native trout. Our 2016 501(c)(3) partners for this event are Colorado Trout Unlimited and the Western Native Trout Initiative. In 2015, this event raised more than $20,000 for projects with a focus on native trout. That money was used for a variety of conservation efforts including partnering with Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado to rehab the trails in the Middle Creek drainage to make it safer and more accessible for anglers to find and catch a Rio Grande Cutthroat. This year, we hope to exceed the amount raised in the past so we can further improve the fisheries for these amazing fish. Thank you for your generosity and interest in protecting native trout!
