THE STORY:

Hi Everyone!!

Thanks for taking the time to check out my crowdrise event! Hopefully as you browse the page you will be inspired to join in the effort but let's start with the basics.

WHO: My name is Jason Van Meter, I'm 29 years old, a life long West Virginian, graduate of Marshall University, employee of a major chemical company, world traveler, musician, amateur chef, and lover of the outdoors. Some people have said I'm trying to give the most interesting man in the world a run for his money, and I don't always drink beer but when I do it's usually from a craft brewery not Dos Equis.

WHAT/WHERE: I am very fortunate to be preparing for a trip to Peru to hike the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. The Salkantay Trek is a roughly 40 mile hike through the high Andes Mountains from the town of Mollepata to Aguas Calientes at the base of the UNESCO World Heritage Inca sanctuary of Machu Picchu. This is an alternative path to the famous Inca Trail that passes alpine lakes and cloud forests on the way to the Salkantay Pass at an elevation of 15,213 feet (4638 m). Through this experience my aim is to raise money for The Cabell Huntington Hospital Foundation targeted to the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center and raise awareness for men's health.

WHEN: I leave Charleston, WV on June 22 and return July 3 just in time for the fireworks on the 4th!!

WHY: Those of you who know me are probably aware my dad has had some pretty serious health problems the last few years. In 2015 he fought a tough battle with prostate cancer under the care of Dr. James Jensen. There were several low points along the way where we didn't know what the next step would be but fortunately he pulled through. While treatment is still ongoing all indicators are moving in the right direction. In early 2017 he hit another hurdle needing open heart surgery to replace a heart valve. Again there were some complications and again after some ups and downs he's on the mend and enjoying retirement. As I'm writing this he's on a cruise with my mom in Hawaii getting some well deserved R&R. With all that said, I feel it's now my time to give back challenging myself with this physical task and contributing to those still battling their health fights. The entire Cabell Huntington team was there for us without knowing us from Adam so if our efforts in this campaign can help one other family it will be well worth it.

HOW: This is where you come into play!! You can get involved in several ways.
1) Any contribution to this campaign would be greatly appreciated by me, the Foundation, and current patients of the ECCC.
2) Share the campaign and story with friends, family, coworkers, your mailman, the lady that lives down the street, anyone!!
3) Share your stories with me and/or the Foundation to keep the conversation going.
4) During the Trek dates go on a hike in your own favorite place and share.
5) If you would like to find out more about the great work being done by The Cabell Huntington Hospital Foundation visit them at www.chhfoundation.org or contact Velma Workman at Velma.workman@chhi.org
