THE STORY:

Hello! We are ETHOS Science Center, an Indiana-based nonprofit with a mission to help children learn and love science.

ETHOS Science first began in 1998, primarily as a competitive FIRST robotics group. Now we have expanded considerably - besides FIRST robotics, we also provide summer camps for kids, workshops for teachers, and a science-based academy for home-schooled and home-bound children. In our center, we have multiple robotics arenas, chemistry/computer labs, and classrooms - and besides robotics, we now teach chemistry, biology, basic coding, and physics. We even have a dedicated LEGO room!

However, despite the many programs we provide, we only operate within one building in Elkhart. Often, our classrooms and labs must be cleared out and transferred to another room just to make way for the next immediate activity. This uses up the time of our employees and volunteers, and leaves many of our programs constantly uprooted.

Our current facility is not large enough to support the robotics program along with the other activities and camps that we provide. Previously, ETHOS rented a separate space for these events, but an Innovation Center will double the space we can use, and eliminate the long-term costs and drawbacks of renting. Bayer Corporation has generously gifted us one of their local buildings to use (the former Miles Lab and Bayer Campus), but to renovate the facility for our uses, it will cost upwards of $3.3 million dollars.

We recently received a $1 million grant from the Community Foundation of Elkhart for our Innovation Center - but with a catch. We must first match the grant by raising $1,000,000 ourselves. Although we have local donors, we would like to expand our fundraiser to the greater Indiana area through CrowdRise. If enough is raised, we will have a total of $2 million -  a step closer to creating our Innovation Center, and a step closer to expanding our mission to help children learn and love science.

Pete McCown, president of the Community Foundation of Elkhart County : “The $1 million we gave them isn’t enough to [renovate the building], so we offered a challenge grant to give Patsy and her campaign committee and her board a story to tell when it comes to asking people for support.”'
