My name is Dimitris Kavakas and I have been involved in University teaching and management for more than 15 years. Recently, with the waves of Syrian refugees in Greece, I have been involved, directly and indirectly with NGO support of refugees in camps locally. I have realized that the majority of them are children and young people fleeing to get a life in Europe. The need for proper University education is vast but they have to money for that, since they don't even have houses to stay in! I have decided to start an ambitious project and establish a branch of an American University in Thessaloniki, Greece, since most of the refugees live in camps around this city. I am talking with a number of Universities and there is a big interest in this. I just need the funds to make the initial investment. I estimate a 2 million budget as an initial cost to start the project, which I am hoping to get by the end of 2016 so that we can make preparations for the inauguration of the college in Fall 2017. The funds will be spend on: 1) lease buildings for classrooms, offices, student residencies 2) make changes to building to create the required spaces and meet the legal requirements for college buildings, 3) purchase of furniture, equipments, computers, books and library subscriptions 4) scholarships for young refugees, 5) administration and operational expenses of the University for the initial period. I have a detailed business plan that is available to whoever needs to see it with detailed cost of the project. The University will eventually become a fully operational college, however, the vision is that it will always offer full scholarships, including room and board, to refugees, while the crisis remain, and later on to other similar groups of people in need. This project is a life project for me and I am dedicating all my energy and strength to it. I would be really thankful and would pray for all of you who would be willing to contribute to make this a reality and see the lives of the young refugees being transformed.
