$31,500 is needed to match a $31,500 foundation grant which, when combined, would enable Plant With Purpose to purchase a new Toyota Land Cruiser. This vehicle would enable our Burundi staff to do their job in a safe and effective manner, in turn equipping thousands of farming families to climb out of poverty. Plant With Purpose Burundi, located in East Africa, needs a more reliable vehicle. The current vehicle, when used for field visits on rough roads to reach our participants deep into rural areas, is more costly to upkeep than it is currently valued/worth. The current vehicle has broken down multiple times and is unreliable because it is not a vehicle built for rough terrain. Of Burundi’s 8,000 miles of roads, less than 10% are paved. The Burundi staff needs a vehicle that can handle the roughest of roads in order to reliably reach our participants. Driving in Burundi is difficult and dangerous. The roads are rugged and take a toll. In addition to the road and terrain challenges, militia groups now frequently occupy the streets of Burundi after dark. A breakdown used to only cost time and repair, but now could cost the life of our staff members as they sit stalled on the side of the road. We recently had a breakdown like this and left our staff vulnerable on the side of a road known for militia attacks for several hours as they waited for a family member to come rescue them. Luckily they were safe, but don’t want to risk this twice. Burundi is one of the poorest and most malnourished countries in the world. 67 percent of the population suffer from malnutrition. We currently partner with 7,172 families in 77 communities. Our programs are working well and the demand for growth is high. The new vehicle would enable us to serve these families and more in the coming years.
