THE STORY:

"This is a request on behalf of my sister, who is in need of a new roof in order to stay in her home. For years, Deborah (62) has rushed to the aid of others, sharing what she has, taking in those with nowhere to stay, feeding and caring for any in need while still juggling the responsibilities of a single parent. After many changes in life, setbacks and years of hard work, she finally bought a home where she could still offer that helping hand and take care of herself. The roof needed more work than previously thought, and it is apparent now that previous owners, rather than fixing the problem areas, shingled over the entire roof multiple times. As a result, it is now it is leaking in several areas, some heavily. One large hole has a temporary patch over the kitchen, and there are more holes now, and too many soft and rotted places to try patching it. Deborah works hard and is frugal, but there is not enough income to support a roof repair. She has no means to fix it, and the organizations in her Florida area are overwhelmed with requests from homeowners and do not repair roofs, even for seniors in need. To make things worse, if the roof isn’t repaired, her insurance company will drop her coverage at renewal soon, forcing the mortgage company to foreclose her home. Because of this, rather than see her lose her home, whether to the elements or the to the insurance regulations, I am requesting help on her behalf. She has done so much to help others without asking or expecting anything in return that I hope now a little from a lot of different donors can solve this problem and keep a roof over her head. Although she has done everything in her power to fix this herself, she is in great need but reluctant to ask for help. I got up on the roof there to help put the patch on when I came to visit her, but I am a single parent living out of state and attending school, so I can’t do much more. Two local contractors have estimated the cost to be $10,000 to repair and re-shingle this roof. It could be done within a couple of weeks once the funds are raised. The rainy season is approaching again, so please share this with anyone you know who might want to help, and thank you so much for taking the time to read her story." ~ Kathy Grajales
