A Trip to the Zoo
Organized by: Fred Curtis
I currently serve as a sixth grade English teacher at SciTech Academy in the Uptown neighborhood of New Orleans. Here in New Orleans, a complete charter school network, standardized testing is huge, perhaps bigger than it is in other education systems. The benchmark examinations my students take once a quarter are not only a huge part of their quarterly grade, but they also impact other aspects of their educational experience, like high school admissions. I previewed our next benchmark assessment, and the stories and questions that my students will answer all have some relation to zoos/animals. Unfortunately, many of my students live below the poverty line, thus inhibiting their ability to be exposed to many of the natural elements other children across the district and state may know or understand. As a result, I would like to take my students on a field trip to the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans. This trip will be accompanied with numerous writing and reading assignments that are aligned with their common core standards. If we fail to reach our goal of $3200 by October 31, I will ensure that your donation is returned to you in full. If you would like more information from me, on the trip, or the assignments that will accompany this trip, please feel free to contact me via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Additionally, a line-by-line summary of expenses, as well as photos and writing samples from my students, will be made available upon request after the trip.
