Hi everyone! I am about to be a college graduate from Framingham State University with a degree in pre-medical biology. I have minors in Spanish and Neuroscience and my next big plan is to apply to medical school as a family practitioner. I have worked to put myself through college and come to learn the art of balancing work, school, and life in general. I think I've found the key - do what you love, love what you do!
I have spent the past two summers volunteering and carrying out a parasite study with an incredible organization, Partners In Development (PID) in San Antonio, Suchitepequez, Guatemala. Last summer was my first time volunteering with PID. I headed south, ready for whatever was about to come my way. After two months of establishing a parasite study that examined and treated school children for parasites in five village schools, I returned to suburbia Massachusetts with pressing feelings. My work was simply not finished in Guatemala - I had to go back. So I did!
This summer was spent with a formal research study with my awesome lab partner Julie, also a returner from last summer, on the efficacy of a single-dose antiparasite treatment on soil transmitted helminths. ...Helminths are parasitic worms; these worms live in the dirt in places with poor sanitation. They infect people living in impoverished tropical areas without proper hygiene and without 100% access to clean water or bathrooms. The study is taxing, but it is coming along well!
This profile photo is a pic of me teaching a class of second graders how to say, "Thank you", "You're welcome" and "Please" in english on the chalkboard at the village school, Desierto. Along with checking and treating students for parasites we also taught public health classes on what parasites were and how to prevent them. Thanks to an incredible donation, we were able to give each student a toothbrush, toothpaste, and soap. In between research, Julie and I staffed the PID's Guatemala clinical lab for patient diagnosis and treatment.
To be able to volunteer in PID's Haiti clinic with my younger sister would be a most incredible experience. This is a wonderful organization; the epitome of helping those who may never be able to reciprocate the help, but who need it most. Being thanked, and knowing that the work we do is so greatly appreciated gives me chills. PID lets the people that we work with know that they are appreciated and cared for both in health and well-being. I want to help PID provide the unconditional care that they do to the people who need it most.
What makes me give back? I have to - it's a passion, it is satisfying. I think we are all here to help each other for as long as we can. The ability to give back is somewhat of a luxury. It means things are going well enough to give to another - Ironically, of all the people I have met, it is those with the lest who are always the most willing to give. I want to give back to them.
Any amount you could donate, even a few dollars, will be so warmly and immensly appreciated. The PID clinics are the backbones of this organization; the teams who volunteer time to fill the clinics with medical professionals and patients are the hearts, arms, and legs that keep this organization going strong.
I hope you give to our cause - it is incredibly worth your timer and dollars.
