Jessica: I've been an employee of AABR in the Education and Training department for 4 years now, and every day I am humbled by the stories that direct care staff bring to trainings about their experiences on the job. This is no easy job, as is with any occupation that works directly with people. Yet, those dedicated to the field come back every day to their facility or residence to get the job done because of the individuals they serve. Staff witness the hardships and obstacles that the individuals face each day in order to live a normal life. They share in their frustration and woe when a day becomes difficult and in their joy and elation when a goal is met or an achievement is made. Something as simple as tying a shoe or beginning to speak when normally nonverbal are significant accomplishments.
Often this field becomes more than just a job but a livelihood, and in this agency we learn to take care of each other whether staff or individual, just like any other family would. The budget cuts to the field in New York State affect us all, and we must do what we can to support one another.
Throughout our relationship Anthony and I have always had a special place in our hearts for running. As high school kids we casually met during practice for our track team, and several years later we would get engaged on our alma mater’s home field. We are proud to be able to run for AABR in order to fundraise to help better serve people with developmental disabilities.
For almost six decades, AABR has been guided by the dream: “May each life find meaning.” We teach daily living skills, inspire self-confidence and empower adults with developmental disabilities and children with autism to lead productive and rewarding lives.
Today, AABR serves individuals across the New York metropolitan area through these initiatives:
· The New York Child Learning Institute school for children with autism
· Residential Homes
· Vocational Training
· Adult Day Programs
· Family Services Programs
· Saturday Respite / Recreation Programs
· Drop-In Center
