Covenant House was founded in 1972 with the simple, profound mission to help homeless kids escape the streets. Today they provide loving care and vital services to homeless, abandoned, abused, trafficked, and exploited youth.
1 in 3 of these kids will be approached by a human trafficker within their first 48 hours on the street. It's hard to imagine having to face such hardships before you've even graduated high school - not to mention even having the stamina to graduate. However, when other doors close, Covenant House opens doors for homless youth.
I was first introduced to Covenant House while living in New York in early 2015. I was a member of the Home Team for the 2015 NYC Half Marathon and slept on the streets of New York for an evening to raise additional funds as part of the Young Professional Sleep Out. Through this experience I was able to meet some of the formerly homeless youth whose lives were changed forever by the donations provided to Covenant House through campaigns like these. I was also forever impacted by these interactions, and knew that I even after leaving New York, I still wanted to be involved.
Thus, when I received a lottery spot in the NYC Marathon, I knew immediately that I could not pass up the opportunity to one again support these kids and this wonderful organization. I began running long distance events just a few years ago, and I never thought a marathon would be on my agenda It's too long, too hard, and too much of a time commitment. However, when you think of the incredibly terrifying things homeless youth experience on a daily basis, it pales in comparison. The need me more than I need sleep, soon-to-be-missing toe nails, and happy hours. They also need YOU.
Please join me on this journey to my first marathon, and meeting my fundraising goal of $4,000. Thank you!
