Abby and the Furco Family (Joe, Patty, Maggie, Abby and Emily) became a treasured part of the Janney and St. Columba's communities in 2012, when Abby (then 5) was in treatment for a rare form of childhood leukemia. We watched Abby grow stronger throughout the Furcos' two years here in DC. We even celebrated her end-of-treatment with the family and cheered when Abby returned to attending school regularly, playing soccer, Girl Scouts and more.
Shortly after the Navy moved the Furcos out of the area in 2015, we learned that Abby’s cancer had relapsed, and 8-year-old Abby underwent a bone marrow transplant. The transplant saved Abby's life but took its toll on Abby's organs, and she has painfully and bravely battled graft versus host disease ever since.
In July 2016, Abby's doctors determined that they couldn't cure Abby, and instead set about making her as comfortable as possible in hospice care. She was given 48 hours to live...
...That was over 8 weeks ago! Abby had other plans! She was "not ready." In August, Abby was able to attend SPECIAL LOVE'S CAMP FANTASTIC, a week she looks forward to year after year. Abby is THRIVING today, in part, due to her miraculous experience at the Camp, where kids get to be kids for a week while receiving medical care and experiencing independence away from family and hospitals. Special Love also sponsors BRASS Camp(BRothers And SiSters of siblings with cancer), which welcomed Abby's sister Maggie for her fifth summer this year. It was a wonderfully fun, peaceful, freeing and comforting week for Maggie. She was surrounded by an unspoken understanding of what was going on in her life.
Both camp weeks were priceless gifts for the Furco Family. They gave Abby a reason to live and a purpose for that week, and from that experience her body is getting stronger every day. In fact, these camps have inspired Abby to happily plan ahead for her 10th birthday on September 24!!
As family and friends of the dear Furco family, we're asking you to please join our "$10 for 10" campaign to support Special Love, the outstanding organization that has had such a profound impact on Abby, Maggie, and the entire family. The Furcos hope to raise $20,000 for Special Love -- and the Janney and St. Columbas communities hope to help them achieve that goal with our "$10 for 10" campaign to raise $7,000. We can achieve this if just 700 families donate $10!
Special Love lets kids be kids, through camps, financial assistance, and a community of support that lets them (and their families) know that they’re not alone in their battle with cancer. Special Love, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, based nearby in Winchester, VA. They serve a large number of children battling cancer families in VA/DC/M. They were founded out of great love over 30 years ago. Special Love helps cancer kids, siblings and their families through week long summer camps (one for survivors & one for siblings), weekends that bring whole families together, teen/young adult programs for survivors too.
