EVENT DATE: Jan 05, 2016

Fletcher Yancey

THE STORY:

My brother and I hope to raise money for UCP by riding the entire east coast of Florida (Fernandina Beach to Key West) on our bicycles. In addition to donating the proceeds, we hope to raise awareness for cerebral palsy. We plan to ride 540 miles over 9 days. We will start December 28th, 2015 and end on January 5th, 2016.

The idea behind the ride was to combine three things that are important to me: altruism, bicycling, and my sister Corey. Growing up with a sister with cerebral palsy gave my family a unique perspective that not many get to experience. She passed away in 2010. She wasn't supposed to live passed 5 years old, but because my parents and our family loved and cared for her so much, she lived to be 15 years old. Corey loved unconditionally. And our bicycle ride is inspired by that love.

Monday, December 28, 2015 Monday morning at the corner of North Fletcher Avenue and AIA in Fernandina Beach, FL was full of activity. In the recreation center north of the intersection, a group of ladies were moving in synchronicity doing a Zumba dance and skateboarders were attempting a simple tricks. To the east, people clad in beach attire, with chairs strapped to their backs and sandals on their feet, were meandering to the Fernandina Beach. From the south came a family walking in clothing and shoes indicating a morning exercise stroll. Throughout the intersection were people casually walking, appearing to be making decisions on which store to visit or a places to eat. Underneath the street blades that designated the intersection North Fletcher Avenue and AIA, stood two brothers, clads in t-shirts worn over florescent yellow biking shirts that had screened print on them, “A Bicycle Ride for United Cerebral Palsy.” Fletcher Yancey , a 2014 graduate of the University of Florida Forestry Department, 27, and his younger brother, Cleve Yancey, 24, of Ocala, FL, were about to embark on a nine day trek from Fernandina Beach to Key West, as a fundraiser for United Cerebral Palsy. While making final adjustments to their personal bikes and attire, the duo was approached by a couple who had seen the Yancey’s park and unload their bikes from the trailer with an identifying magnet stating “Key West Bound! A Bike Ride for Cerebral Palsy”. The couple approached and asked the elder Yancey about the ride. “We are headed to Key West as a fundraiser for United Cerebral Palsy and are scheduled to be there in nine days”. When friendly questioning continued, Fletcher explained, “Our sister died five years ago of a combination of severe physical disabilities, one of them being cerebral palsy. This bike ride is inspired by our love for her, altruism, and the fact that were just want to have some fun.” The couple seemed intrigued by the brothers’ quest, moved by their cause, and donated twenty dollars. 2 years ago
