Abigails 5th brain surgery on her TN journey
Organized by: Dawn Miller
EVENT DATE Mar 08, 2016
Abigail is currently 16 years old. At the age of 11 Abigail was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia (a.k.a. suicide disease). This condition causes severe electric shock and stabbing facial pain to the both sides of her head and face on a daily basis. Abigail was very active in the community and played softball, attended school functions, and was an active cheerleader. Abbie can no longer can do these activities due to the daily pain from which she suffers. This condition is very rare in children and, according to research, only affects people over the age of 50 years old. Today there is only 50 known pediatric cases world wide. Doctors who know and treat this condition are very few to none and most will not see a pediatric case, but after many appointments with neurosurgeons and phone contacts, we found a doctor in the UCI Medical Center in Irvine, CA by the name of Dr. Mark Linskey who agreed to help my daughter through a phone conversation. The issue was the fight with our local state insurance company and the hospital in Irvine California could not come to a agreement. On August 1, 2013, Abigail had her first MVD (micro vascular decompression) surgery on the right side of her brain in Boston MA. with a surgeon we felt could get her out of pain, boy we were wrong. Immediately after her surgery I knew something wasn't right! Abigail continued to have the facial pain she had experienced prior to surgery. Abigail, only days following surgery, developed a CSF leak (Cerebral Spinal Fluid). After speaking with Dr. Linskey in California after her surgery, he agreed that Abigail's first MVD surgery failed. After this I was determined to get Abigail to California for help. We cancelled her state insurance and took a plan through the Obama Care Plan in which we continue to pay a monthly premium for Abigail alone so she can get to proper care in California. Abigails had her 2nd MVD (Re-do) on the right side on February 18, 2014 in California which took her pain away for several months but for it to return again. Abigail then had her 3rd MVD surgery in May 6, 2014 on the left side, This is when she was diagnosed with bi-lateral Trigeminal Neuralgia. Abigail went on to have a Gamma knife surgery on March 25, 2015 to try to damage some of the right side Trigeminal Nerve to alleviate some of the pain on the right side. As of today February 24,2016 the pain on the right side still causes her many issues, We are not quite sure why she isn't responding or getting any pain relief on this right side. We will again be flying back to California for Abigail to have her 5th brain surgery since being diagnosed, The surgeon will be going back into the left side to rid the left Trigeminal Nerve of any blood vessels that may have found there way back on the nerve that is still causing her to be in pain. Abigail's surgery is scheduled for March 8th 2016 in which this will require us to be in California for another 4-5 weeks. We can use all the help we can get due to co-pays and insurance premiums. This will also help with car rentals and meals while she is in the hospital.
