On November 5th, 2013, I was pregnant, 9 days past my due date, trying to stay patient and positive, and bracing myself for the possibility of inducing birth. I had no idea what was ahead of me, but I knew I was in good hands. Three days later, I was holding my son Charlie for the first time, shortly after an emergency c-section that came on the heels of over 40 hours of labor. I was lucky to be surrounded by my skilled and loving midwives, who had provided me with invaluable prenatal education and care throughout my pregnancy, labor, birth, and in the postpartum weeks that followed, and the caring and gifted doctors and nurses at Kaiser, who sensitively and skillfully helped us navigate a birth experience that turned out to be later, longer, harder, and different than we had expected. I do not know what would have happened to Charlie or me had we not had access to that care. And thankfully, we did not have to find out. Not all mothers and babies are that lucky. I can’t accept that.
This November 5th, 2017, I will be running the San Francisco Golden Gate Half Marathon to fundraise for Every Mother Counts, a non-profit organization dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother, everywhere. As a mother, a coach for mothers, an athlete, and a San Franciscan, this race and this cause are near and dear to my heart.
