ABOUT ACCIO BOOKS AND THE HARRY POTTER ALLIANCE
For millions of children across the world, basic access to books and literacy programs is hardly a given. The Harry Potter Alliance is engaged in a permanent campaign to balance the scales. Our ultimate goal is to raise 1 million books for schools, community centers, and literacy programs across the world. We also endeavor to build 25 permanent libraries in places that need them. Last year, we had our most successful Accio Books yet, with over 100,000 books raised for 50 literacy programs across the world and a new library established at an elementary school in Masaka, Uganda!
This year, we are partnering with Words Alive, an organization that provides literacy and education services to over 5,000 children and families in Southern California. HPA chapters and members will raise thousands of books for Words Alive, allowing the organization to provide quality books to students of all ages for many years to come. Many chapters outside the western United States will choose to donate books to schools and programs in their local communities. Overall, we expect to match last year’s incredible effort, with dozens of communities across the world transformed by the generosity of our members.
Donations to this campaign will help us coordinate this global campaign in support of education and literacy!
Update - May 1, 2017: Our signed Deathly Hallows book contest and House Cup competition are now closed for entry and participation. Donations received beyond this point will help fund our global book drive but will not be eligible for rewards and prizes.

You must donate to the campaign by 11:59pm PST on Tuesday, April 30 to receive the above perks and entry into the contest. Shortly after that deadline, we will distribute a contest entry form to everyone who has donated. Each donor must complete a fun, Harry Potter-themed creative writing activity and submit it to the HPA by May 15, 2017. The grand prize winner and runners up will be selected by an impartial jury and prizes will be distributed shortly thereafter.

Help your Hogwarts House win our Accio Books House Cup! Make your donation through one of the four official Hogwarts House fundraiser pages and recruit other members of your House to do the same. Everyone who donates through the winning Hogwarts House will receive an invite to an exclusive livestream show featuring Lauren Fairweather and The Whomping Willows! If you're fundraising for the campaign, you'll be able to credit your funds raised to your prefered house via a separate form we'll distribute before the end of the campaign.

Q: Are you legit?

Q: Is my donation tax deductible?
A: Yes! We are a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit organization. The full amount of your donation is tax deductible.
Q: Usually you offer a bunch of perks and we just pay for the perk we want. What’s up with this new structure?
A: Our old way of crowdfunding was immensely expensive and reduced the amount of money and time we were able to allocate directly to the stated cause. This new approach to fundraising is designed to be impact-driven and will significantly reduce overhead costs and staff time dedicated to coordinating perk distribution. Long story short: More of your money will go directly to the cause!
Q: How does the contest work?
A. It’s super easy! Your donation of $10 or more entitles you to a contest entry form, which will be sent to you via email during the first week of May 2017. Your task will be to complete a fun and simple Harry Potter-themed creative activity as described in that email. An impartial jury of HPA staffers will review each submission and select a grand prize winner, who will win a Deluxe Edition of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows signed by JK Rowling. We will also select a runner-up, who will receive a VIP pass to a Mischief Management con of their choosing, as well as several honorable mentions, who’ll receive a signed book by John Green, Robin Wasserman, or Mercedes Lackey. Q. English is not my first language. Can I submit my signed Deathly Hallows contest entry in another language?
A. Yes! HPA volunteer staffers speak English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Mandarin Chinese, Tagalog, Dutch, Kannada, and Hindi. We can accept contest entries in any of these languages.
Q. What is the Apparating Library Book Club?
A: As mentioned above, every donation of $35 or more receives a lifetime membership to the Apparating Library Book Club. The book club is an exclusive community of HPA donors, led by awesome HPA volunteers. We feature several books throughout the year and provide prompts for meaningful and thought-provoking discussion.
