BENEFITING: ACE BAILEY CHILDRENS FOUNDATION
ORGANIZER: ACE BAILEY CHILDRENS FOUNDATION
EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
Hello and welcome to my page! I am so excited to be given this opportunity to raise money for such an amazing cause for the second time! The Ace Bailey Foundation is near and dear to my heart. I am a wife, an online fitness coach, a teacher, a 10 time marathoner (this will be my 7th consecutive Boston Marathon) and I am fortunate beyond belief that I have three fantastic children.
My youngest was born at 32 weeks and weighed only 3 lbs 8 oz. She spent 42 days in a NICU before coming home to her 18 month old brother and 3 year old sister. During those exhausting days back and forth to the hospital, I vividly remember the "family room". There was a tv, books, games, small kitchen always stocked with food and drinks, and couches. I would take breaks every once in a while and visit that space during my six hour visits. It's amazing how much a change of scenery and a cup of tea can rejuvenate you during an exhausting and stressful time.
The Ace Bailey Foundation raises money for Boston's Floating Hospital for children at Tufts a Medical Center. They provide so much for families going through challenging and stressful visits to the hospital. A few years ago, they purchased new recliners for the NICU. Kangarooing is when a newborn is put on you for the skin-to-skin contact that is so incredibly important for their growth and development. I spent hours, days and weeks sitting in those types of recliners with my daughter on my chest, waiting for her to be strong enough to be able to come home. The fact that I now have a chance to give back in a way that made such an impact on me is truly a blessing. I look at my now 8 year old and although I can't believe it was so long ago, I really does feel like just yesterday.
You may be wondering who Ace Bailey is and how this foundation originated. Garnet "Ace" Bailey is a former Boston Bruin who was killed in the attacks of September 11th. His family founded this organization to help keep his memory alive by making a difference in the lives of children and families going through some difficult medical treatments. They focus on creating family friendly, softer enviroments to reduce the stress on families. A friend of mine has witnessed first hand what Ace's Place has done for children as her daughter received treatment at Tufts. I was so honored to wear her name on my shirt when I ran for the foundation a few years ago, and I look forward to representing her well again this year.
I appreciate all of your support and be sure to high-five me on Marathon Monday!
