DAY TO GO
My name is Raymond Bailey and I am running the 2017 Boston Marathon on behalf of The Ace Bailey Children’s Foundation. This is an amazing opportunity that combines two of the greatest gifts in my life: children and running.
With the birth of my two daughters my life changed forever and became more wonderful with the addition of these two precious gifts, but it was not without incident. Our youngest daughter required an extended hospital stay and additional hospital visits in the first few months of her life. Our story is not unique, which is why the Ace Bailey Children’s Foundation’s work is so important. They are dedicated to improving the comfort for young patients and their siblings who receive care at The Floating Children’s Hospital at Tufts Medical Center. Ace’s Place at the hospital is a unique place that allows children to get away from hustle and bustle of the hospital. I am honored to be involved in helping the foundation support The Floating Hospital at Tufts Medical Center.
I am dedicated to raising charitable donations for the foundation and equally dedicated to running a strong race. Running the Boston Marathon is a dream for many, and for me it will be a dream come true. I attended the Boston Marathon as a spectator last year, within 5 minutes of being in the city, watching world class athletes and cheering with thousands of other enthusiasts, I knew I wanted to run this race. I ran my first race, a 10K, about 6 years ago and have not looked back. I view running as a gift and will keep running until I no longer can!
In every race since my first 10K, I have met inspirational people who challenge themselves, but still find the time to encourage everyone around them. I take this to heart and push myself to achieve new goals year after year. It is fascinating to be part of a community comprised of people from so many different walks of life and various abilities, all lining up together to take on the same challenge. I have run numerous distances from 5Ks to 50 milers to a 24 hour race, each one with its own challenges and triumphs. But the best races are those I run with my wife and daughters while I cheer them on to reach for their own running goals. We all share the gift of running together, and for this I am so thankful. I know they will be there waiting to cheer me on as I cross that finishing line achieving my goals of running the Boston Marathon and raising funds for the Ace Bailey Children’s Foundation.
The Ace Bailey Children’s Foundation was started soon after the tragedy of September 11th, 2011. Ace Bailey, former Boston Bruins great from the 70s (a member of 2 Stanley Cup winning teams) was lost on that day. His family wanted his legacy of being a generous and playful character to continue after his death. The Foundation has raised $2.2 million dollars for The Floating Hospital at Tufts Medical Center. There are many ways the foundation raises charitable contributions, including using charity bibs for The Boston Marathon.
Please consider making a donation to this important organization and if you can, come on down and experience the magic of the Boston Marathon on April 17! Being part of this event as a spectator, competitor or donor is a gift beyond compare.
