BENEFITING: Achilles International Inc.
EVENT DATE: Mar 19, 2017
There are many reasons why people run--like running to lose weight, improve heart health, relax, or justify the amount of lululemon in the wardrobe. Murakami wrote an entire novel on the subject, 'What I think about when I think about running.' Amy Marxkors had a snappier reason: I run because I never want to waste money on laxatives.
For the past 10 years running has been an integral part of my life--though I grumbled my way through high school track, vowing never to accelerate past a nice 4 mph allegretto walk ever again, in the latter half of college I found running an awesome way to leave my phone in my room and take 1-2 hours to myself.
From senior year winter break to the present, I've periodically run with Achilles International on Saturday mornings; the group is dedicated to helping people with disabilities (visual, brain trauma, etc.) achieve their fitness goals and participate in mainstream able-bodied-focused sports. I've made a couple great friends through Achilles, including Mauricio, with whom I ran the Bronx 10-miler a couple months ago.
I am thrilled to have the opportunity to fundraise for this awesome organization and run in the United NYC Half this coming March! I hope you can help me support Achilles by donating (very tax deductible!).

Our mission is to enable people with all types of disabilities to participate in mainstream athletics in order to promote personal achievement, enhance self esteem, and lower barriers to living a fulfilling life. When you see physically challenged athletes on the course using their arms to propel pushrim or hand-crank wheelchairs through the course, those are Achilles athletes. The people running with a tether between them? Those are visually impaired or blind Achilles athletes. Amputees, people with Multiple Sclerosis or Cerebral Palsy, those recovering from organ transplants, or living with diabetes -- all are Achilles athletes.
While Achilles programs focus on athletics, the truth is, sports are simply the tool for accomplishing the main objective: to bring hope, inspiration and the joys of achievement to people with disabilities.
With your help and support, Achilles International can support athletes of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities in their quest to run the 2017 United Airlines NYC Half Marathon. Our athletes and their guides will race alongside our charity team to bring barrier-shattering inspiration to the streets of Manhattan. YOUR donations help us provide race registration, team jerseys, transportation, team meals, and admin logistics to Team Achilles in the NYC Half.
