BENEFITING: Achilles International Inc.
ORGANIZER: Achilles International Inc.
EVENT DATE: Nov 03, 2013
I am looking forward to the challenge of running my first marathon on November 3, 2013, 26.2 miles around the greatest city in the world.
I am fundraising for Achilles International. Achilles International helps disabled athletes participate in athletic events like road races (5ks, half & full marathons) and triathlons. Over the last two years, I have been running in local and national races in which Achilles athletes are often participants.
As an Achilles volunteer, I guide runners in Central Park on Tuesday evenings by navigating the course and the crowds. I'm impressed every week by the athletes and volunteers that are there to spend the evening together despite rainy nights, high temperatures and the Harlem Hills. Whether we are enjoying the shade of the big loop, huffing up Cat Hill or sprinting the last block up to 90th street (not my choice :)! ), a good workout is shared by everyone. These athletes do not let their disabilities hinder their spirits or their successes.
Being a part of Achilles has reminded me how important it is to persevere. I am not the fastest or the smartest, but I feel fortunate that I have always been able to put my nose to the grindstone and get it done. I think marathon training will suit me :). I am looking forward to, and a bit nervous about, the challenge.
Achilles mission is to enable people with all types of disabilities to participate in mainstream athletics in order to promote personal achievement, enhance self esteem, and lower barriers to living a fulfilling life.
Please support me, Achilles International and over 200 disabled athletes participate in the NYC 2013 marathon. Your contribution will assist Achilles in their mission.
