Formed in 2001, the ACP is a grassroots Illinois non-profit organization that provides housing, food and education for over 100 children orphaned by AIDS. This organization has grown by leaps and bounds in the past year. In July they took in 29 new children who were without homes after the orphanages they were living in were shut down. A new housing facility to accommodate these children is currently under construction. In keeping with their mission of sustainability, the ACP has also recently converted its entire facility to solar power, planted large gardens for food, planted hundreds of trees to help the environment and prevent soil erosion into Lake Awassa, and now has clean water from an onsite well.
Documenting these developments to raise awareness and support is essential to the lasting success of the ACP as it continues to dramatically improve the lives of Awassa children and the community in which they live.
When and Where:
In March of 2012 I will be traveling to Awassa, Ethiopia along with ACP Founder Paul Chahda and Creative Director Kyle LaMere to serve as cinematographer on three film projects showcasing the progress and achievements of the Awassa Children’s Center, Vocational Training School, and One Love Theatre; an AIDS education community theatre company.
The stories captured in these projects will help The Awassa Children’s Project to reach a wider audience and expand their network of support in the ongoing efforts to fight injustice and provide a brighter future for Ethiopia’s next generation.
