EVENT: 2018 Pittsburgh Marathon
EVENT DATE: May 06, 2018
16 Years ago my family experienced one of the scariest moments of our lives. In February of 2002, our mother, Kathy Williamson, was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I was in high school, enjoying some of the greatest and most carefree years of my life when we received the news. The fear of the unknown caused our minds to race and the thought of our mom being diagnosed with cancer was completely overwhelming. However, my sisters and I will never forget the unbelievable strength showed by our parents. There was never once a moment, from the time that they sat us down to share the difficult news, that their resilient mindset as a team did not shine through. She fought tirelessly through surgery, chemo, and radiation, never once waivering in the stregth tht she showed her family. My sisters and I grew up in an athletic family. Our understanding was always that these genes were passed along to us from our father who played hockey at the professional level. However, we quickly learned that one of the most physically and mentally tough people in our lives, was our Mom.
This February, our Mother, now a Grandmother of 4, is celebrating her 15th year of remission. The path that she has paved for our incredible family will always be cherished. Her hard work, selflessness, compassion, and endless enthusiam for life and her family, are qualitities that will never be taken for granted. So this year, I will celebrate those qualities and values that our mother continues to fight for daily. The 2018 Pittsburgh Marathon is an incredible opportunity for us to continue raising awareness for all forms of cancer, and I am excited to be a part of that mission.
For the Marathon, I am going to be running along side one of my best friends in Pittsburgh, Sibe Broers. Sibe and his wife Vanessa have meant the world to us since moving to Pittsburgh. Sibe's aunt Thea - (hence the team name Kathy and Thea - Kathea!), is currently battling Pancreatic Cancer. We keep her in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time for their family. Sibe and I are so grateful for your support and donations as we honor the most important people in our lives.
I LOVE YOU MOM!
