THE STORY:

Who We Are

We’re going to tell it to you straight.

We’re in the Rockaways, a peninsula in Queens, south of JFK Airport. Most people here are poor. We’re talking extreme poverty. Third world poverty. 200% below the poverty line poverty.

For 15 years, we have been the last line of defense for the Rockaway’s poorest. We’re a one-stop-shop for people’s basic needs down here. We provide food and clothes and dozens of education and empowerment programs for kids and adults. Whatever people need to get on their feet. And out of poverty.

We also provide dancing, joy, smiles and love.

1000 Days Since Sandy

When Sandy struck, thanks to help from folks like you, we were the number one resource for people down here. Everyone will tell you. We did as much as any national organization.

We saved people’s lives. Because we had the relationships.

But the truth is, Sandy is not the real disaster. Poverty is the real disaster. All the nice homes on the beaches were rebuilt. But in the other Rockaways, people got nothing. The Rockaways struggled before Sandy. The storm only revealed, in painful detail, the depths of inequality.

It has been 1000 days. We’re still here. Three years after Sandy. We’re here every day.

What We Do

We provide food, clothes, job training, career services, mental health services, after-school programs, anti-gang programs, cooking classes, music classes, art therapy, field trips, college prep and so much more.

We work with 5000 adults and 500 kids per years. Among our kids, 95% graduate high school. Yes, that’s 95%. There have been zero arrests, zero shootings and only a single pregnancy.

We provide 25,000 meals a month. Sometimes it’s the only real meal a kid will get all day.

We keep families together that would crumble. We have helped hundreds of people rise out of poverty into self-sufficiency. Now they have jobs. They give back. They help their friends rise out of poverty, too.

We remind people that they matter.

Recognition

We have gotten a lot of attention for our success.

We received the Helping Hand Award from Mayor Bloomberg. The New York Times, the Daily News and ABC News have covered us. The organization Save the Children cited us as a model in their annual report. The Library of Congress archived interviews with us for posterity. Governor Cuomo, Robert Kennedy Jr. have visited and sung our praises.

We’re doing what we are meant to be doing. We’re doing our best. And it’s working.

We need your help

But we need your help. For real.

We have two centers. They’re where the magic happens. Food distribution, education, empowerment and after school programs. They are lynchpins of our community. But they only cover two-thirds of the Rockaways. We need a third center to cover all of the Rockaways. Our centers close at 6. We need to keep them open till 11 to give kids have a place to go at night, safe from gun violence, which has reached an all-time high. So they don’t get shot. Seriously.

As you read this, we have to choose between feeding children and sheltering them. We have to choose between mental health services and job training. With your help, we won’t have to make these choices anymore.

We have been dependant on the city for much of our funding. It only covers a small part of what we do. Not to mention, the city bureaucracy turns slowly. Payments get delayed. Hungry kids can’t wait.

The Big Picture

We’re not just looking at today. We’re building for the long haul. We’re making this organization sustainable for twenty years.

If we do it right, we can make sure no child ever goes hungry in the Rockaways. We can make sure that everyone who truly needs help, gets it. We can help thousands more rise out of poverty.

We can give people hope. Real hope.

And if we don’t… If we don’t, a whole community will be thrown away. A generation lost. In the shadow of New York City, we will have a permanent underclass. Our own Ninth ward.

We can prevent that.

We have the relationships. The know how. The track record. The passion. The respect

We just don’t have the cash. We need your help. Can you step up?

What Will My Donation Do?

$1
A PLATE OF FOOD

We serve 25,000 meals per month to more 5,000 adults and 500 kids. They’re depending upon us. A single dollar will buy a plate of healthy food to a hungry Rockaway resident.

$10
CLASSES FOR A YOUNG SCHOLAR

We provide so many programs for students. They range from music and choir to computers and filmmaking. Ten dollars will allow us to put one of our kids in class, learning, having fun, and staying safe.

$100
HELP KEEP OUR CENTERS OPEN LATE

There’s a huge difference between closing at 6pm and closing at 11pm. Those hours are the most dangerous. With many of their parents still at work, our kids have nowhere safe to go. We’re talking about saving kids’ lives—literally.

$1000
HELP OPEN A NEW CENTER

We have two centers right now. They cover most of the Rockaways. With a third center, we’ll be able to cover the entire peninsula. Every single person in the Rockaways who needs help will get it.

$2500
SERVE ONE PERSON FOR A YEAR

If you take all of our costs and divide it by the number of people we intend to serve, it comes out to $2500 per person. That’s to change someone’s life forever. To give them opportunities they never imagined for themselves. Think about it.
