Do you know what kind of disease has the ability to change who we are as individuals; to steal the memories of our loved ones; or take away the ability to take care of oneself? Alzheimer's disease is the only cause of death in the top 10 in America that can not be prevented, cured or even slowed. It is a disease that every 67 seconds someone in America develops. It is a disease that affects 1 in 9 seniors, but only half of them even know they have it. It is a disease that is the 6th leading cause of death in America, but the 5th leading cause of death in New Jersey alone. Although Alzheimer's disease touches every community, every population and almost every age, there are some groups that are at greater risk of developing the disease. The lack of equity, both social and environmental impacts the health and well-being of all and creates health disparities. Act Now Foundation's goal is to eliminate or reduce health disparities and the impact of Alzheimer's disease on our low-income, urban communities and to practice inclusiveness and equity in engaging these communities to build supportive, capable, and Alzheimer's educated environments.

Act Now Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization that works to create Alzheimer's capable communities by raising awareness and educating low-income, urban neighborhoods about Alzheimer's disease, prevention and early detection. Our programs help the public recognize the signs of Alzheimer's disease, ensure that community members receive timely diagnosis, treatment, and management, and offer continuous support, education, and assistance to community professionals, organizations, and families living with Alzheimer's. To facilitate the continued development of our community based services, we provide the following programs in both English and Spanish; professional training workshops for direct-care workers, including Home Health Care & Hospice Agencies, public safety and law enforcement officials, including Sherriff & Police Departments, and local businesses and organizations on coping skills, crisis intervention and essential knowledge needed to handle the day to day challenges of Alzheimer's, as well as non-professional caregiver educational seminars, and support groups to help guide and improve the physical, emotional, and financial impacts of Alzheimer's disease on individuals and their families. Our programs were honored with a Citation Award from Councilman Daniel Rivera of Jersey City for our dedication in helping fight Alzheimer's disease through our vital research and essential support programs and services. We also co-wrote, with Assemblyman Carmelo Garcia, three landmark Bills for the New Jersey Legislature that will improve Alzheimer's patient care in NJ, including; Alzheimer's disease listed as secondary cause of death on death certificates, ensure that Hospitals and ER's prominently list Alzheimer's disease on patient records, and to increase the training Home Health Care Aides receive as part of their certification. We are sounding the alarm about Alzheimer's disease in our Hispanic and urban communities, not to cause a panic, but to stimulate change and build hope.
