Dear Friends, Family and Community,
As many of you know I have sustained a personal connection with Nepal and a commitment to supporting the health of Nepalese people since 1975. On April 25, 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake ripped through the middle of Nepal leaving thousands dead, tens of thousands of wounded and millions without access to shelter, food and clean water. My heart calls me to respond thoughtfully.
This major trauma will affect the lives of the Nepalese for many months, if not years, to come. I plan to go to Nepal in May and June to assist coordination of healthcare teams in the Kathmandu Valley and rural communities hit hardest by the earthquake. I will administer simple acupuncture treatments to those experiencing the overwhelming stress of trauma. This five needle ear acupuncture protocol evolved from traditional Chinese medicine into the NADA protocol (National Acupuncture Detoxification Association www.acudetox.com) that I was trained to administer in 1992. It also mitigates the onset of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
In September 2005, I joined a few acupuncture professional colleagues from across the US to initially respond to the devastating wake of human trauma left by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in Louisiana using the NADA protocol. Consequently, a non-profit organization called Acupuncturists Without Borders -AWB (http://www.acuwithoutborders.org/) was formed to effectively deliver some 8000 treatments over the next nine months. Since then AWB and its members have facilitated response teams in many other wide-scale human traumas and trained hundreds of health workers to deliver the NADA (www.acudetox.com) protocol. I have found predictable success using it in my professional practice and in disaster response settings that include the 2010 Haiti earthquake and 2014 Oso WA mudslide.
As in the past, I will volunteer my time and close my Seattle office to make this trip. I estimate a financial need of $3000 for transportation, food and lodging over several weeks and am appealing for your support. Any amount will be gratefully received and acknowledged with a report upon my return.
