My name is Adam Coughlin and I am a 41 (as of Jan 2016) year old college professor at Saginaw Valley State University. I have taught college for 16 years, including my time spent and Michigan State University for my MS and PhD. It is in those graduate school years that I learned to swim with goggles on and my face in the water. I worked at the outdoor pool and the lifeguards taught me how to swim on their breaks, still working on those flip turns though. I've been swimming since I was young, when at age 4, my mom enrolled me in a learn to swim program.
Swimming and triathlons have always interested me. In 2001, I put together my first tri relay team and the sport grabbed hold of me. My quest for adventure (racing) has taken me all over the US, and even the globe. I have completed several triathlons, ranging from sprint to Ironman distances. Ultra-running has been a newly develop habit of mine as well, completing two 50k and two 50 mile races in recent years. Ultra…anything interests me. I have extended that to swimming as well. I have complete two Cocos Crossing swims (4k swim from Cocos Island to Guam in the Pacific Ocean) and four Swim to the Moons (5k swim through a chain of lakes in Michigan).
I'm beyond excited to be a part of this year's Mighty Mac Swim and to have all of my friends and family supporting me.
