My patient and very best friend Adam Cole (Aviles) passed away last July he had a disease called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. He required the use of a ventilator and he could not move from the neck down, due to muscle loss over the years. His surviving brother also has DMD.
The amazing thing about Adam was the fact he did not let this disease limit or define him. He was funny, a big flirt, and full of life. At times I wasn't sure who took care of whom more me or him. We watched scary movies and liked the same music. I'm proud to call him my best friend even when he drove me crazy. We shared our sadness, our plans, and our secrets. I do know he hated his disease and asked why god would do this to them. I had no real answer. So I laughed and said because he gave us each other. Adam had plans and dreams. Both he and his brother still are being taking care of by their incredible mother who is also disabled and their family of nurses.
Without a van to travel these boys dreams are hindered. Adam made me promise last time he was sick if he were to pass and his dreams could not be completed. That I would make sure his brothers Stevens’s dreams had a fighting chance. So I'm asking my friends, family, and strangers to take a moment and think about how easily we can live our dreams daily even if it's as simple as visiting our friends and loved ones and let's do this for this family. Let's give them these memories and help with the burden of the bills associated with the hospital costs, daily activities & most importantly transportation. With great thanks the loving hearts of the family members generously helped with the cost of funeral. Every penny counts and we all have a even in hard times just a dollar to spare. I give you all my love and thank you in advance, and let's all smile at the thought of Adam now running trough heaven.
