THE STORY:

The Kyangwali Refugee Settlement, located approximately 80 km from the Hoima District of South-West Uganda, houses over 20,000 refugees. The majority of refugees come from Congo, South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi as well as Somalia. As in many refugee camps, food scarcity is a big issue among other pressing issues such as health care. In Kyangwali however, most of the refugees have adapted to life within the camp through subsistence farming, mainly producing grains such as corn. While subsistence farming yields grains, the lack of processing materials for grains into alternative food options proves problematic.

ADC’s project aims at establishing two electric Posho Mills that can help process grain into flour at a cheap and affordable cost. Additionally, the machines will provide a source of income for the refugees of Kyangwali, by providing access to the mills by local villages. The project is to be implemented during a six-week period between May and June 2013 by ADC members in collaboration with COBURWAS (www.coburwas.org)
