ADDRESSING ENERGY POVERTY IN LOW-RESOURCE SETTINGS
Organized by: GSI Initiative
Event Name: CGI U Commitments Challenge 2016
Imagine life without electricity. From the computer you use to access this page to the light you use to study, from the stove you use to cook to the medicines and vaccines that keep you healthy, electricity is integral to all spheres of our life - tied to health, education, poverty, gender equality, and the environment. Yet 1.3 billion people around the world do not have access to electricity. In these energy-deprived communities, babies are born in the dark, life-saving medicines and vaccines deteriorate in the heat without refrigeration, billions of women and children endanger their health everyday by cooking over toxic wood/coal stoves, and millions of girls lose their chance at an education because it is too dark to study. Energy and economic development are inherently related. To promote economic growth and opportunity globally, we must first tackle the issue of energy poverty.
The GSI Initiative, a student-run 501(c)(3) non-profit based in Chicago, has set out to do just that. By joining forces with teams of students across the nation and developing a series of collaborative projects, the GSI Initiative hopes to help alleviate some of the issues associated with energy deprivation. Currently, the GSI Initiative is working on developing an electricity-free autoclave, improving education in energy-deprived areas, and developing shoes that generate electricity. Our major project though is an electricity-free vaccine fridge. This fridge is close to completion, and we now need your help to move this project forward. With the funding obtained through this platform, we will be able to finally manufacture our protoype. Once manufactured, we can bring it to areas in need, thereby improving access to medicines and vaccines. We already have partners in place who are willing to distribute the fridge and use it in energy-poor areas. The issues we have described above are complicated, but the solution is simple: Donate today! Any amount you can donate, even a dollar, goes a long way in promoting energy equality and economic growth globally. Your support truly means a lot!
