Adele Rushneck, RN
My name is Adele Rushneck-Feeney, I am going the distance for our patients at Westchester Medical Center, the flagship of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network.
I am thrilled and deeply honored by the opportunity to represent Westchester Medical Center in the 2016 TCS New York City Marathon in support of our patients through the Westchester Medical Center Foundation.
I am the assistant nurse manager in Westchester Medical Center’s Trauma Intensive Care Unit. As a member of the WMCHealth team for 37 years, I’ve had the opportunity to care for many of our region’s sickest and most badly injured patients and to experience the lifesaving work performed at Westchester Medical Center.
November’s NYC marathon will be my third NYC marathon. In 2013 while training for my very first marathon, I suffered the sudden and unexpected loss of my dear son. As a nurse and as a mother, I know there truly is no greater love and no greater loss than that of a child. With his passing, I was devastated. I was broken. How would I ever find the strength to run a marathon now? After a few weeks of no running and no training, I decided I would get back out there. My son would have wanted me to continue my training, to push myself and finish what I started. I would make him, his brothers and my entire family proud.
Running the marathon that year truly was a healing experience for me. It showed me that if you dig deep enough you will find the strength to get through 26.2 miles and you will also find the strength and the courage to face life’s difficulties, challenges or tragedies. Through my loss, I am able to support and encourage my patients and their families as they face unexpected tragedy, illness or unexpected loss. Life is a marathon and no matter what you may be facing, I believe it is important to set your sights on a goal or a path, dig deep and stay focused. It may not be easy, but you will get to that finish line or you will get on the right path. For me, it was a path of strength and healing. When I run this year’s NYC marathon, I’ll do so in honor of all the patients who have been treated here at Westchester Medical Center and the staff who is so committed to their care.
