Stuff About Me:

Erik, my son, is a 13-year-old boy that suffered a brain injury when he was born due to lack of oxygen. Months later he went into a Hypoglycemic coma for a long period that rendered him unable to do anything by on his own; like speaking, walking or caring after himself.

For the first several years of his life, Erik suffered countless seizures and would have many episodes of oxygen deprivation and dangerous glucose drops. The first few years Erik was alive, we practically lived in the hospital.

Looking at Erik today, I realize he has come such a long way since then. He is stable enough that he is no longer dependent on oxygen and he playfully interacts.

But we still have our many struggles. We dream of one day having all the needed amenities so we can help Erik get around the house easier.

Not too long ago, I saw I a clip on Facebook of Dick Hoyt, a well-known runner who competes in marathons with his disabled son, Rick and his story inspired me to explore the possibility to include Erik in marathons. Shortly thereafter Rooster of Ainsley's Angels reached out to me inviting Erik to run in the Rock n Roll marathon in California. Much to my surprise Erik enjoyed it immensely.  Since then we have participated in many smaller races plus an ultra marathon in Vegas.  Now Erik has been invited to be involved in The annual Hoyt Elementry run in Holland Massachusetts. Erik has never been in a plane before. To travel with him such a distance will be a daunting task, that will also take a financial toll on us. This is why we are looking to raise funds to help accommodate such an important trip.

Erik will never be able to speak. He communicates his emotions, sadness, pain, happiness, mainly through his facial expressions. My son has never looked more carefree then when he is running. This is how I know we will continue running to hopefully inspire other people with the same needs.
