Dear friends,

Thank you for your kind wishes and generous contributions to this effort. It’s comforting to know we have friends like you.

It was heartwarming to find your benevolence shine from different corners of the world. We even had the support of six year old Tulsi from New Mexico who baked and sold banana breads in her town, and a group of 3rd graders in Omaha who fundraised everyday for three weeks.

We wanted to update you on our efforts so far. As we began this fundraiser, a committee of five teachers at Sunshine identified 73 students and three faculty members as affected by the earthquakes to varying degrees. While everyone survived the quake, some lost their relatives, many sustained damages to property, and others lost their homes. Based on this assessment and each family’s financial situation the committee decided a relief package that included a combination of tuition waivers and school supplies for students and Rs 5,000(50USD) relief money for each of the three faculty members.

On July 17, Sunshine organized a relief distribution event where families were also invited. Six students were granted a six-month tuition waiver; 62 received at least a one month tuition waiver and school supplies; five received all their course textbooks. This cumulated a total expense of Rs 125,810(1,250USD) in fee waivers and Rs 60,210(600USD) in school supplies.

To this day we have raised over 9,000USD. Of the 3,000USD allocated for relief, over 2100USD has been used. The committee will continue to note the situation of students and families and will extend appropriate support.

Students at Sunshine come mostly from low income families; the earthquakes exacerbated the financial woes of many. Your help was invaluable in obviating any compromise with their children’s education. We’d like to convey that the students and families are grateful to you.

The school is also finalizing the design and planning for its “new campus project”. Each earthquake resistant classroom (approx. 400 sq. ft.) is estimated to cost Rs 300,000(3,000USD). With high cost this project is expected to span several years. The first construction phase (four classrooms) will begin in a few months. Please let us know if you or your acquaintances would like to get involved in any capacity with the project.

Lastly, we want to reiterate we are grateful for your friendship and thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
