ABC CoE February 2016 Update: Milestone w/ MDACC Executive Team!
February 24, 2016
We are a diverse group of women, but we share a common bond—we are all living with advanced breast cancer. We each face the reality that there is no cure, there is no end to our treatment; the dire statistics are that most of us will live only 3-5 years after our diagnosis with advanced breast cancer (also known as stage IV or metastatic breast cancer). Although no one wants to have advanced breast cancer (ABC), through this common bond we can offer each other strength, hope, and inspiration. We share deep emotional pain, but we also share love, mutual support, and compassion.
Our common bond has evolved into a common dream—to create an Advanced Breast Cancer Center of Excellence, which will set the benchmark for compassionate, evidence-based patient care that not only improves quality of life for women with ABC but also prioritizes research that will extend and ultimately save the lives of these women. For more on our vision, click here.
We all have our cancer “journeys,” and our hope is that our journeys, with your help, will include the legacy of establishing a standard of excellence for patient care, research, and a cure for ABC. Although some of us will not live to see this dream come to fruition, we are fervently committed to making a difference for those living with ABC and for those who will come after us.
Only 5%-7% of the funds currently raised for research on breast cancer are directed to ABC. Many of us feel invisible, forgotten, and left behind by the health care industry and the research community. We need a paradigm shift that begins with turning the spotlight towards ABC research. We are not settling for the current, grim statistics; we need money to develop innovative therapies that will extend our lives and allow us to live our lives to the fullest, with breast cancer.
For us, this conversation has already begun. As survivors living with ABC, we have come forward to share our experiences and to impress on our medical teams the immediate need to direct attention and funding toward ABC. We firmly believe that MD Anderson Cancer Center has both the expertise and the infrastructure to support an ABC Center of Excellence that will offer excellent care to extend life while providing the best possible quality of life for those living with ABC. It is our intent to help MD Anderson provide such care while searching for a cure for ABC, turning our dream into reality.
We aim to raise $10MM to achieve our dream of establishing an impactful and sustainable Advanced Breast Cancer Center of Excellence at MD Anderson Cancer Center. All money raised through this fundraiser will go directly to MD Anderson to support this specific goal.
We encourage you to visit our personal pages (see Team Members below), which unveil the remarkable, heart-wrenching journeys of lives burdened by ABC. Through our stories, we hope to show you our triumphs and struggles, our hopes and fears, our loves and losses, and our fate—to live life to the fullest with ABC. We hope that our stories will inspire you to support our dream by making a generous donation. We also hope and encourage you to share our stories with your communities both online (click the FB or Twitter share buttons) and offline. We sincerely thank you in advance.
