The Adventure Girlz summer camp provides participants with positive adult mentorship and a built in social support system; creating a network of sisterhood that will last a lifetime.
Eight girls from the St. George Youth Sports League will participate in the Adventure Girlz summer camp that will be held at the College of Charleston and the St. George Tennis Center. The girls will participate in surfing, sailing and kayaking; they will develop leadership skills, team building skills and the power of personal narrative. The program has a science component and the girls will develop a community based enviornmental project that they will work on in St. George for the rest of the year.
The program has received grant money but we stil need additional funding to make this project a reality. We needs funds to provide transportation for the girls to the various venues; the cost to cover the bus and a CDL driver for the time that we have the bus. We also need funds to cover three dinners and all lunches since the girls will be away from the campus partiipating in sports and we can not utilize the catering facilities at the College of Charleston.
All of our facilitators are participating pro-bono and we are only raising funds for the cost of the camp as we have only required our girls to pay a small registration fee. Please help us make our camp a reality and change the lives of eight girls.
And here's why:
Rural communities are often overlooked when we think about the economically disadvantaged. Images of urban blight are often pervasive when describing the working poor. Yet, there is a significant rural population who goes unnoticed when we discuss the rise of poverty throughout the United States and because of that the children in these communities suffer.
St. George with a population of 2084 people is one of those overlooked communities. According to the US census the median household income is $17,634.00. Yet, despite the lack of financial resources the people in this community strive to provide their families with the American Dream, often coming up short. Extracurricular activities and summer camp are a luxury that few families can afford. The St. George Youth Sports League is committed to servicing the children in our community, specifically our young women. Adventure Girlz is a summer sleep away experiential education camp designed to instill leadership skills and confidence within our young women. The program incorporates social justice, sports and education to provide participants experience in teamwork, goal setting, leadership training and personal narrative. Our adventures include: kayaking, sailing and surfing.
