TAM’s Aero Squad Afterschool Program seeks to address the crime, education, and financial problems facing Compton. TAM's Program deters youth from gangs through mentoring and serving as a safe-haven for at-risk youth ages 8 to 18 from 8am-8pm, 365 days a year. To help with education and career preparation, TAM offers aviation classes taught by FAA Certified Flight Instructors, tutoring sessions, CAHSEE & SAT Preparation, and life skills lessons. Life lessons include teaching students about working for a goal and budgeting through “Museum Dollars.” Museum Dollars are a point system crediting students’ involvement in educational and service learning activities. Museum Dollars can be redeemed for flight lessons in aircraft with Certified Flight Instructors, free time on computers with Internet, or as scholarships for higher education.
Our fundraising goal for the 2011 Aero Squad Summer Learning Program is $20 per child per day for 30 at-risk youth to receive structured enrichment activities five days per week in our 8-week program. Costs will cover supplies, a healthy lunch and culminating field trips.
