BENEFITING: WOMEN FOR WOMEN INTERNATIONAL
EVENT DATE: Dec 25, 2011
Every day that I wake up, I know that just over the cement walls that protect my camp, there are people who are shocked to wake up alive. Then, some of the local people (mostly men) are bussed into the camp to perform such jobs as cleaning bathrooms, wiping tables in the cafeteria, and doing laundry. This is the beginning of their future: their democracy, their economy, their hope.
These are things that Americans don't have to think about. Americans do not have to walk the streets and see men holding AK47s. We do not have to stroll the sidewalk in fear that a suicide bomber may strike or a car bomb may explode. Our country is an amazing paradise when stacking it against this war-torn land.
As an educator, I was distraught to learn that the female population has only a 12% literacy rate. Can you imagine living without being able to read or write?? Women are not only the creators of new life but also the forces who teach and empower their children, so we must begin to assist them!
The money that is raise here will be donated to a non-profit organization that assists the women of Afghanistan to teach them a skill set that could be used for income. You can read about the organization here: http://www.womenforwomen.org/global-initiatives-helping-women/help-women-afghanistan.php
