Tech it to Dem! Safety App for LGBT/Queer Jamaicans
Organized by: Afifa Aza
Like many places in the world Jamaica can be very unsafe for LGBT persons. A team of cool trailblazing women (& 1 awesome guy) is working on a project called Walk Good Jamaica which uses technology to support and empower the Jamaican LGBT community.
Walk Good is a 3 tiered safety application to address pervading fear and anxiety felt by many Jamaican LGBT persons. The app will have SMS functionality for abuse/harassment reports, a website and a mobile component (Android OS). WGJ tailors and expands the information provided for help and support depending on which tier of the application is used. The SMS service is 85% complete and will be ready for testing by the end of June 2014. We have a committed team we just need more resources to move the project forward and fully actualize all of its elements.
The Queer Women in Tech Summit in NY, June 19-22 would be a great place to learn from other women doing amazing things with technology and also to mobilize resources for the project. If time allows we'd like to use some of the funds raised to to have our project lead, Afifa, attend. TIME is TIGHT, but we want to TECH IT TO DEM!
