As a healthcare provider, caring for patients and their families is what I do. However, it never occurred to me that one day I might need that same care. Well… in 2014 I found myself hearing those dreaded words "you have cancer." I was shocked to hear I had an aggressive form of prostate cancer.
What followed was a series of intense cancer treatments which included surgery, radiation and hormone therapy. Thankfully, the treatments are working and I'm on my way to becoming cancer free. And while I am grateful for the benefits of my cancer treatments, I feel that my road to complete wellness is still ongoing.
One of the things that has nourished and healed my soul the most has been getting back to what I love: caring for others. This passion – and now life's calling – is not only enhancing my life, but has encouraged me to step up and become a men's health advocate and healthcare ambassador to those in need, both locally and internationally.
Recently, a wonderful opportunity has presented itself: to join other people impacted by cancer for a two-week volunteer program in India with A Fresh Chapter. Whether spending time with disabled men and women at Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity, working with kids at an underfunded daycare in one of Delhi's slums, or helping under-served youth through a career empowerment program; I will build new connections, gain perspective, and step beyond my story of cancer to help create a ripple of good in the world.
Through this program I will have the opportunity to volunteer my time and energy to people on the other side of the world, as well as serve as a Cancer Ambassador in communities where cancer is often veiled in shame, secrecy, and stigma. In the process, I hope to turn the page of my own Fresh Chapter and heal myself as I work to heal the world. Please consider making a donation to support my ability to take this extraordinary journey. Any amount helps. I look forward to bringing you with me on this journey of discovery and will volunteer in your honor while I'm in India.
