BENEFITING: Afrika Tikkun
This is a story about a family in Diepsloot, a South African township near Johannesburg. Margret, 25, lives in a one roomed house with her 4 children, aged 1 to 4 : Lerato, Mwapheto, Mildred and Big Boy. She is on her own because the father of her children is serving 30 years in prison. Margret is uneducated and cannot find employment to sustain the family. The situation grew to the point that Margret could no longer feed her children. In despair, she attempted group suicide on herself and the children. She was rescued by an Afrika Tikkun Family Support worker just in time.
The 4 children are enrolled in the Early Childhood Development Center of Afrika Tikkun in Diepsloot where they get fully prepared for primary school. Margret goes to counseling with an Afrika TIkkun Health Care Worker. The family receives food parcels from Afrika Tikkun, in expectation of Margret finding work as a domestic worker.
Afrika TIkkun has a holistic approach in providing family support services. The overall objective is to build towards a sustainable future for children in South African townships.
