I'm helping to raise $20K to support AFS-USA's study abroad diversity scholarship initiative, Faces of America.
Give Because: Studying abroad introduced me to a new kind of diversity
Thanks for visiting my fundraiser page! My name is Cristina, and I’m and Alum of a program called AFS-USA Faces of America (FoA). For two decades, FoA has been providing full study abroad scholarships to U.S. teens who – like me – want to see the world but can’t afford the cost of studying abroad. AFS-USA is currently celebrating the 20th Anniversary of FoA, and because my AFS experiences were so valuable, I’m helping to raise $20K to give future teens the same type of opportunities I had.
Why? Because studying abroad truly changed my life!
Thanks to my FoA scholarship, I was able to go abroad on an AFS summer language immersion program in France, where I learned French, but also met dozens of interesting people from all different countries. Doing so made me realize how much cultural diversity exists in the world. Back home, I always thought of diversity as something dictated by race, ethnicity, or wealth; but in France, it was our languages, interests, and perspectives that set us apart. The most amazing thing was, despite our differences, we all got along so well! In many ways, our differences made the experience richer and brought us closer.
Through FoA, I discovered how much I love learning about other people and cultures. So once I returned home, I managed to get a second scholarship through the AFS-USA/BP Global Citizens of Tomorrow program to study abroad in South Africa, this time for a full year. Experiencing a summer abroad opens you up to pretty much whatever you want to do, because you no longer are afraid to try new things. To think of leaving home for a year can seem scary, but I couldn’t wait to go, and it changed my life forever.
In South Africa, I experienced true culture shock, which changed the way I see everything, gave me more patience, made me more humble and definitely made me more aware of global issues.
The Bottom Line:
My FoA experience opened the door for me to begin my journey around the world, and without it, I never would have been able to do so. When you sponsor this experience for an individual, you are changing a life – changing who they are going to be and the decisions they are going to make.
So please help me provide other students with this life-changing experience. Support my campaign to help raise $20,000 for FoA scholarships today! Any amount helps. And if you’re wondering exactly what kind of impact your donation will have, here’s a helpful index:
- $5 - $10 shows support for diversity scholarships!
- $20 buys a student's official AFS T-Shirt (worn for orientation and travel days)
- $100 covers Pre-Departure Orientation materials
- $200 pays the Application Fee
- $500 pays the Program Deposit
- $1,500 covers international airfare
